Notos AgriAgriculture has long been the mainstay of Serbia’s economy. Although less than one-fourth of economically active Serbs are now employed in farming, cropland occupies nearly two-thirds of Serbia’s territory. Land and climate conditions are highly conducive to the development of agriculture.

Three-fourths of sown crops in Serbia are grains. Corn (maize) predominates, occupying some one-third of the cropland, and wheat is next in importance. Other noteworthy crops are sugar beets, sunflowers, potatoes, oilseeds, hemp, and flax. Fruits and vegetables are also cultivated. Livestock production is dominated by cattle. Part of the produce is exported but most of it is processed by the domestic food industry, stationed mainly in Vojvodina (plants for processing of meat, fruit and vegetables, oil plants, sugar refineries, dairies, etc.).

The principal area of commercial agriculture is the Vojvodina region and adjacent lowlands south of the Sava and Danube rivers, including the valley of the north-flowing Morava River. The economy of Vojvodina is based on the abundant wealth of fertile arable land which covers 84 percent of its area. Its natural fertility is improved by an irrigation network so that out of 1.78 million hectares of arable land, around 0.5 million is watered.

Notos Agri will be developing a wheat farm on the Belo Blato site.
